Robo-Fish Provide Protection From Fishers
For years, compassionate individuals have tried to protect fish from being impaled with sharp hooks and yanked out of the water. Now, PETA is enlisting state-of-the-art technology to help. PETA has worked with U.K. scientists to design “robo-carp” that are specifically designed to emit loud predatory noises.
Using remote controls, pro-fish activists will direct these robo-carp to circle boats that are fishing, thereby scaring all fish away from the fishing boats and saving the fish from horrible injuries and death on fishers’ hooks.
Scientists have been working on robotic fish for years. In Britain, they created a robotic shark that was convincing enough to fool the real sharks and was able to record previously unknown shark behavior. Scientists in Japan hope to market their “robo-koi” to survey oil platforms for underwater damage. “Robo-carp” have been wowing people for years in the U.K. And now, even Hammacher Schlemmer sells a remote-controlled shark.
You Can Help Protect Fish!
PETA plans to expand this program, so stay tuned for information on how you can purchase your own robo-fish to protect the fish in your area.
In the meantime, here are some suggestions for converting fishers into compassionate citizens:
- Request copies of PETA’s pro-fish leaflets to hand out at fishing spots in your town, or download them for free.
- Read up on how intelligent and fascinating fish are, and write a short letter to the editor of your local paper to help other community members understand why fish should be treated with kindness, just like all animals.
- Do you know any fish-eaters? Help fish and people by printing out and distributing “Deadly Poisons From the Deep,” a fully footnoted and sourced report documenting study after study proving that the consumption of even small amounts of fish can cause severe health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and infertility.
